HIS 104 HIS/104 HIS104 Week 1 Discussion 1 Islam, the Americas, and Spiritual Reformation
Islam, the Americas, and Spiritual Reformation. Choose one of the three topics below for your initial post.
Topic A: Islamic Empires
The Islamic Empires are often referred to as the “Gunpowder” Empires. After watching The Ottomans, explain what new military techniques and weapons these empires used as well as the role of the Janissaries.
Topic B: Columbian Exchange
The Columbian Exchange involved the massive exchange of food stuffs, ideas, and people across continents. Assess the impact of the exchange on the Americas, Europe, China, and Africa. In your discussion post, explain:
  1. What each area added to the exchange (e.g., commodities, ideas, diseases, etc).
  2. What each area gained.
  3. What consequences each area faced as a result of this exchange.
  4. Which areas benefitted and which ones were harmed.
Topic C: Spiritual Reformation
Choose one of the religious upheavals that occurred in the world between 1500 and 1650. Using both your course text and the required supplementary readings, discuss the following:
  1. What new ideas did the religious reform propose?
  2. Who was threatened by the spiritual reform?
  3. Who did the reform movement appeal to? What was the appeal of these reforms?
  4. Was the reform an isolated event, or part of a larger global spiritual shift?
  5. What consequences of the reform can we see in our world today?
Respond to two classmates’ posts by Day 7. In your responses to others, you must address at least one classmate who chose a topic other than the one you chose. Identify something from your classmate’s post that changed your perception of the topic or explain how your perception of the topic is different. Your responses should strive to open up the possibility for further discussion and bring in new information or perspectives on the topic.
